Mushrooms are revered in a lot of healing traditions for their medicinal properties – especially reishi, maitake, shiitake, and turkey tail – but all have anti-inflammatory properties via inhibition of NF-κB signaling, incorrect regulation of which has also been linked to cancer.

I generally prefer mushrooms cooked since heating removes the chemical hydrazine, a carcinogen, that is otherwise present in trace amounts. Raw vegans can follow the original recipe.

I added asparagus for a little extra nutritional punch – just a half cup of asparagus provides over a third if your recommended folate for the day – but add or remove whatever vegetables suit your mood and the contents of your fridge.

This soup is absolutely NOT real pho by any stretch of the imagination but it hits those notes if you have a craving and stands on its own as a super delicious, umami-packed dinner option.

Dear Maggie, happy to have found your website. In my frantic research for a dear friend I need to read an easy explanation of the Metabolic Approach. I struggle with the Book by Jane McLelland. thank you. About the recipe: Janes book says to avoid asparagus. Asparagus contains has high levels of asparagine and glutathione …. whatever that is. And it is not good for cancer. It is all very confusing.

Hi Sabine,
I’m so sorry to hear about your friend! I’m so glad he or she has a caregiver like you! I can’t agree more that there needs to be more easily digestible info on the Metabolic Approach. I also struggled with Jane’s book though I’ve been lucky to get to her personally since. I summarized what I know (including her notes about asparagus, lol) here: https://cancerv.me/2019/06/03/metabolic-strategies-for-controlling-cancer/ but it is not super accessible. I’m now producing a documentary that I hope will fill this void – https://cancerevolution-movie.com/ I’m also working on online video coaching that I hope to have done by the end of this year.
In the meantime, my favorite books are on the topic are here: https://cancerv.me/2020/01/05/top-books-to-heal-cure-cancer/
So much love to you and your friend!
